Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is often due to a sudden blow to the head. This can damage the brain and lead to disability. Common causes include physical aggression, traffic accidents, gunshot wounds, sports injuries, and falls. A result of either a penetrating head injury or strong jolt to the head can be a disruption to how the brain would normally function.

Symptoms may be relatively mild to more severe and are related to the area of the brain affected and the level of damage. Patients who have a concussion or TBI may not immediately notice symptoms. Visual problems may not immediately be apparent, but difficulties may arise later. Both adults and children may be diagnosed with a TBI.

Overlooked Issues

Acquired Brain Injuries or a concussion may have resulted in a host of issues. Visual problems are often not a focus during the initial treatment phase. However, there comes a time to address changes to vision as eye structures and the brain are important for the intake and processing of sensory information.

Concussions or a Brain Injury can result in symptoms of visual impairment like:

  • Reduced visual field;
  • Discomfort;
  • Memory problems;
  • Double vision;
  • Sensitivity to light;
  • Blurred vision; and
  • Headaches with visual tasks.

When inefficiencies in the visual system appear, seemingly simple tasks can become difficult and require more effort.

Patients that have a Traumatic Brain Injury can have issues with:

  • Eye-tracking;
  • Fixation;
  • Focus change;
  • Maintaining attention; and
  • Near and distance visual acuity.

These are only a handful of visual skills that could be impacted by a concussion or brain injury. Our team at Anderson Family Vision Therapy can partner with patients to make improvements to a person’s visual system.

  • Dr. Anderson and his staff are so patient and friendly. Dr. Anderson prescribed me glasses and I had the toughest time picking out frames. They didn’t rush, but instead made helpful suggestions and now I have an awesome pair of frames, not to mention the fact that I can see ten times better than before. You guys are the best!
